"I loved this adventure."

~ Jennifer Leidich

“I can almost GUARANTEE that Memoir Writing, ink. will be the most worthwhile investment of funds, time, brainpower, and creativity that you can imagine. Whether you end up writing a full-blown memoir, dabbling in your journal, or simply continuing to read beautiful writing, you will do so with powerful tools, a new perspective, a smile on your face and in your writerly heart. Promise."

"Grateful, inspired, and writing with confidence."

~ Patricia Houston

"I have taken many creative writing courses over the years, but none of them have come close to offering what I have learned during these 12 weeks — not only about the craft of writing, but also about myself. Alison’s weekly briefings always sent me to my computer or notebook to write, filled with inspiration, new thoughts and ideas. I will treasure these lessons and refer back often."

"One of the richest gifts I have ever given myself."

~ Trish Cannon

"When I signed up for this course I never imagined what it would be like, nor what I would receive. I felt intimidated at first, but just as I was floundering or about to trip over a stump in my path, Alison would reach down and lift me up with a delightful video brimming with wisdom. I could go on and on about Alison's passion, enthusiasm, knowledge and experience, but let me just say: this has been one of the richest gifts I have ever given myself."

"Priceless!"

~ June Elliot

"This was such amazing value for the money! People spend countless dollars travelling, but those trips end. Alison's online course is a journey that continues, and its value only increases. My life has been forever enriched by learning how to craft my stories well. Priceless!"

"Take this course, and you're in for a treat."

~ Ann Dowsett Johnson, author of Drink: The Intimate Relationship Between Women and Alcohol—named one of the top 10 books of 2013 by the Washington Post

“As a bestselling author, I was stuck on my second book and found Alison's program helped me get unstuck, inspired and motivated. Her presence is refreshing, and always welcome. She has a droll sense of humor, a true appreciation of humanity, and she is unfailingly wise about the challenges—and gifts—of the writing journey. Take this course, and you're in for a treat."

"Like waking up in Narnia."

Aspen Heisey

“I feel as if I’ve just gone through a skillfully crafted portal. I went from having a narrow understanding and appreciation of what memoir writing is, to a gradual awakening, to the shimmering panoramic view — like I’ve woken up in Narnia. I had read the testimonials before signing up and was curious what they meant about it being so transformational. Now I know. There is BEFORE this course and AFTER this course.”

"I enjoyed this SO MUCH!"

~ Lori Edey

"There is so much I could comment on: the wonderful, creative organization, the variety, the introduction to authors and their writing, the way Alison has structured the content, the freedom she offers to do it at one's own pace and in one's own way. I really love her presence, her gentle encouragement, her spirit and spunk. And it's all built on such a strong philosophical bedrock, it's healing and integrating and beautiful...all while learning a craft!”

"...immeasurable depth..."

~ Caroline Agis

"It’s not that Alison simply holds a mirror to reflect what you need to see within yourself and your writing; rather, it is as if she holds a body of water of immeasurable depth that allows you to go as deep as you must in order to find out who you really are and what you want to say."

Memoir Writing, ink. is brilliant. STRONGLY recommended.

Barbara Fess

"With every detailed, well-organized lesson, Alison triggers memories and writing. I love her LOL humor, her honesty and acceptance, and her forgiveness and understanding of self-doubt. Alison is an inspiration—Siri just wrote "respiration," which could also work—and Memoir Writing, ink. is brilliant. STRONGLY Recommended."

"...life-changing..."

~ Robyn Irving

"I have grown tremendously as a writer and as a person over the past twelve weeks. My confidence in my own abilities and my belief in my stories have moved into a realm I never could have imagined. Alison provided gentle guidance, solid, clear and humorous reasoning, and invaluable tools. I am incredibly grateful to her and to the whole community of writers she is cultivating for this life-changing experience."

FAQ

  • When does the program actually start?

That depends! If you register now, you will have access to the orientation/introductory chapters right away. Four days later, the first 'official' chapter will open, but this part isn't live, so you can begin whenever you're ready. The LIVE sessions are the first Sunday of every month, and you'll find all the details about those inside the program. (The live sessions are also recorded, in case you can't attend.) If you registered for the January 2021 option, you will receive the introductory chapters on 3 January 2021, but the program won't officially begin until 10 January 2021.

  • What if I can't keep up with the weekly schedule?

If you register for the program here, you will receive LIFETIME ACCESS to these materials and be free to go at your own pace. In that case, the 12-week timeline will only refer to the weekly unveiling of chapters (every Sunday for the next 13 weeks -- we take 1 week off in the middle -- one new chapter becomes available). You can also return to the materials whenever you wish and for as long as you like, so there is no such thing as 'falling behind.'

  • How much time will I need to complete each chapter?

It varies. Each chapter's videos, readings, texts and writing tasks might take 30-60 minutes to review, but everything is broken down into small pieces to give you the option of sitting down for 10-20 minutes at a time OR becoming inspired by an exercise that has you writing for an hour or more. Entirely up to you.

  • Do you offer private mentoring?

I am not taking on any new clients at the moment and even my waiting list is full. But if you would like to work together, or if you dream of doing a retreat in France or Mexico (someday!), priority will be given to people who have gone through this program, so this is the best place to start. And I say that with my whole heart.

  • Will I receive feedback on my writing?

One of the goals of this program is to teach you how to become your own best editor. This is an essential part of developing your voice and craft, and an often neglected aspect of the writing process. While I do not offer private consultations as part of the program, our community forum is an exceptionally beautiful space, closely moderated and overseen by two experienced writers following strict guidelines and parameters. If you prefer to work with a professional, you will have the option of submitting a short piece or excerpt of a longer work to one of our associate editors at a deeply discounted rate exclusive to the students of this program. Many students also connect with a writing partner within the community, so opportunities for illuminating and inspiring feedback abound.

  • Will I have my book written in 12 weeks?

I am a great believer in miracles. Truly I am. And that is what you would need to write a book in 12 weeks. So, unless you are already sitting with a nearly completed manuscript (or you have a direct line to the Miracles Department of the universe), the answer is probably no. But this program WILL give you the essential tools, the perspective and understanding, the clarity, direction, guidance, motivation, energy, accountability AND the critical elements of the craft that you will need to write memoir well. And you will, over time, write a much better book because of it. :)
